The Present Moment

My favorite experience of Christmas is sitting on my family room couch in the dead quiet of the night watching the glow of the small white lights on the tree. Everyone asleep and safe and me just “being”, wrapped warm and snug in a blanket with no sound around me. It becomes my own private world of pure bliss. I sit in the silent night and feel what it would be for the world to be at peace. I feel deeply my own peace. In these moments, I know the truth of Frau Giovanni’s words, “No peace lies in the future that is not hidden in this present instant. Take peace!” Ahhh, the present moment! Let’s both start and stay there…the present moment.

I know that when the holiday season arrives each year our thoughts go to the ideas of giving and coming together. That is beautiful, and I do not discount the season of giving ideals, but what if we decided to live this ideal all year long? Keeping our eyes, hearts and wallets open as the multitude of opportunities present themselves for our giving? Every day we need only turn on our computers or scan the magazine racks at the grocery store check out to see the great acts of kindness perpetrated by Brad and Angelina… one orphan at a time. We need only listen to the gossip on television to know that this or that famous person went to this or that war torn country to give this or that money or support. It can lead to a sort of unintended inertness… we care, but who are we to make any real difference like they do? After all, we are just normal people without the wear withal to support those bold and amazing choices.

I say no! The power of one is so potent that if each of us chose this expression as our daily intention, we would change the face of the world and the history of humanity in the blink of an eye. As one, by one, by one, each individual decided to take personal responsibility where ever and when ever they can. The vibration of the planet would begin to match the power of one rather than the fear of many.

We cannot control what happens in any given moment except as it pertains to our response in the moment. So, the power of one leads us to choose in each moment to take the deepest responsibility we are capable of and respond from there. Someone cuts us off in traffic and we choose to bless them, we get to the door of Starbucks at the same time as another and we grant them passage… these are small and relatively painless choices to make and yet there is a very real ego diminishment that begins to unfold within each time we die to our self-centeredness or judgment.

This creates the possibility for greater expressions of personal power to be born from us. We begin to grow into the person who looks for any and all opportunity to shine our light and bring ease or peace to others. We begin to feed on the high of not only giving, but of the satisfaction of meeting the needs and pain of the world from a place of intending to be the highest vibration we can be.

The power of one means making the choice to be responsible only for our own reaction in a situation and not allowing ourselves to blame or judge. Instead, we live the light of forgiveness in every situation and watch as our own mind bows to our heart. Once we stop blaming and judging, we become capable of living our lives outside of the drama of reaction and begin to watch for the moments we can heal the world simply by smiling or making eye contact with another. We find in the power of one that we truly begin to live as our souls are born to. The time and energy wasted on believing the drama the mind creates and living within it, is freed up to spend figuring out more and more ways to bring joy and ease to others in the world.

The happier we become in the process the more ingenious we become at finding ways to create more gifts to give. Gifts like smiling, holding the door, complimenting a stranger, holding the strangers hand in ours as we listen to their story, making eye contact as we ask the elderly couple in line in front of us at the movies how many years they have been married and then smiling in honor of their accomplishment. Maybe this isn’t adopting an orphan, or building a school for girls who would otherwise go uneducated, but it makes a huge difference energetically as the moments add up and the ripples of effect go out from person to person. Who is to know what impact any choice will have in the grand scheme of things, all we can do is express the best we have within us and let the Universe take care of the rest.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanza, Blessed Solstice, and Happy anything else I may be forgetting. May the New Year Bless you BIG! May peace and the wisdom of your deepest truth burst forth in each present instant and may the gift of you be felt across the earth.
