Philani Nutrition Project

Women and girls make up the vast majority of the people living in poverty around the world today. The need for action to give women more opportunity has never been greater.

The Philani Nutrition Project has changed the lives of thousands of women and children in the impoverished squatter communities of Cape Town, South Africa.

The project started as a way of addressing the health and nutritional needs of children and today it has six Nutrition Centres, and a Development Centre.  The centres offer nutritional support, medical care, counselling and skills training for HIV-positive mothers.  The training programs offered are weaving, silkscreen printing and bead work.

As we all know, lack of education, training and employment creates powerlessness and dependency in women, and makes children vulnerable to illnesses and malnutrition.  These skills training programs provides not only a life but hope for every women who participates.

The Philani Nutrition Project was started by a group of strong, inspired women that used music as a means to share health, knowledge and healing.  They found that music was the best way to deliver their community-based healthcare messages.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu says “Food feeds the body, music feeds the soul” and he’s not wrong there!

The musical health messages by these amazing women found their way into the hands of some of the world’s most noted producers.  They have reworked the ‘public service announcements’ into a potent mixutre of natural voices and electronic production that create a powerful means of communication.

This communication is in the form of a record, “Township Sessions” by The Mothers.

To support this wonderful cause, you can purchase their CD through Rasa Music.  It is not only a wonderful gift to yourself, but a unique gift for the wonderful women in your life.

Tell the world!
