More Than Just Good Looks

By Anne Maybus • Category: Look Good Feel Great

Looking good and feeling great is not just about the amount of lipstick you put on.  It is about loving what you do and being happy to do it.  To celebrate the achievements of women over time I have put together a little quiz.  I hope it reminds you that you, too, are capable of amazing the world with your talents.

1.  Bessie Nesmith Graham, mother of Monkee’s member Mike Nesmith, is famous for what invention?

2.  Hedy Lamarr, the famous actress, was also an inventor.  What did she invent?

3.  The woman who patented ultra sheer, ultra snug pantihose is also famous in another field.  What is it?

4.  Why is Grace Hopper famous?

5.  This woman is famous in many fields.  She is an actress, talk show host and magazine editor.  She is the most famous African-American woman of our time.  Who is she?

6.  I am a famous author despite having died at age 15.  My book, which is a diary describing my life from age 13, was published after my death.

7.   Who am I?  I am one of the earliest recorded female poets.  Most of my works are lost in history.  My work was known for its lyricism and its passion for both male and female figures. I lived on the island of Lesbos in ancient Greece.

8.  Lucille Ball is best known as the zany redhead from I Love Lucy.  She was a dancer and actress but she was also a business woman.  What was she the first woman to do?

9.  I am Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and I was born in Macedonia in 1910.  I became famous world wide for my charitable works and I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.  I died in 1997 and was beatified in 2003.  What is the name I am best known by?

10.  Who am I?  I was born in a poorhouse in France in 1883.  My mother died when I was 12 and my father had to leave us to seek work so I was raised in an orphanage where I learnt to be a seamstress. I left the orphanage at age 18 and began to work for a tailor.

I soon moved to Paris where I became well known for designing hats.  By 1913 I had set up my own dress shop.  By 1923 I was famous for my simple, elegant designs.  Eventually my clothes were worn by Royalty, movie stars and members of high society.  I became known by a one word name.

I am famous for introducing the little black dress, bell bottom pants and a suit which is named after me.  I created a classic perfume which is also named after me, setting a trend for designers from there on.  I died in Paris in 1971.

Once you find the answers to these questions I want you to think about what clever women we really are.  Look at the diverse things these women achieved in their lifetimes and what a lasting impact it has had on us all.  Look inside yourself to see what you might be capable of.  Go out and try it.

Find the answers and send them to competitions@moderngoddessmagazine.com for your chance to win a Soul Journey with Nicole Graham.  To read more in our Just For You column.  The answers and the winner will be announced in our next issue, published on the 4th May 2009.  Competition closes on 1st May 2009.
