Gifts That Give

By Michelle Sweeney • Category: Features, Give Back

December is a time for celebrating and rejoicing and it is very easy to get swept away with the tinsel and gift purchasing that we can often forget the true meaning of the holidays. While this meaning differs from person to person depending on their background or belief, it is relatively easy for all of us to make a big difference in other people’s lives regardless of who we are or where we live.

Smile, an initiative from World Vision, enables you to purchase a gift for someone which is sent to someone else in need. $39 will buy a goat to produce nutritious milk and offspring that can be sold or traded by a poor family or $101 will purchase a bicycle. Prices range from $5 for water purifying tablets up to $387,597 for a large scale water and sanitation project.

World Vision of course are not the only charity offering a gift of giving. Unicef offers a similar gift giving project called Gifts That Give and enables you to give a gift of health or nutrition – things that the majority of us take for granted.  Oxfarm Unwrapped is another charity where you can purchase things such as cooking utensils, toilets, safe refuge for women, sewing classes, bicycle ambulance and much, much more.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is a little different… it offers the ability to give a gift of sight for as little as $25.

Regardless of which charity you choose, your gift will enable you to make a difference to someone in a less fortunate position than yourself.

Happy Gift Giving!
